Namhansanseong is a mountain fortress complex on Namhansan ridge in Gyeonggi Province, southeast of central Seoul. It is a large, historically fortified site built and modified to protect the Joseon capital and to serve as an emergency stronghold.
The complex includes a continuous ring of stone walls, multiple gates, internal citadel areas, temples and logistic facilities, plus a network of trails that are now used by hikers. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding lowlands and is a cultural landscape that illustrates premodern military architecture.
Major construction and expansion took place during the 17th century under the Joseon dynasty, and the fortress was repeatedly used in military crises as a refuge and command center. In modern times the site has been preserved and interpreted as a historic fortress and public park.
The fortress occupies a ridge southeast of Seoul within the greater Seoul metropolitan area, forming a wooded, elevated landscape that contrasts with the surrounding urban and lowland areas.
- UNESCO listing: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 for its representation of East Asian mountain fortress design and its role in Joseon-era defense planning.
- Dating: Most surviving fortifications date to significant 17th-century construction and later maintenance under the Joseon dynasty.

By car: the site lies southeast of central Seoul and is typically a 30-40 minute drive from downtown Seoul depending on traffic; local roads lead to parking areas near the fortress.

- Visit Namhansanseong on a weekday morning or late afternoon to avoid Seoul-area weekend crowds and to enjoy clearer views from the fortress walls over the surrounding hills.
