Main image

Naknek Lake is a large lake in southwestern Alaska that drains to Bristol Bay through the Naknek River and lies in the Naknek and King Salmon area of the Alaska Peninsula region. It is an important freshwater system for regional fisheries and supports extensive freshwater and riparian habitats.

The lake’s coastline includes sheltered bays and river inlets used by salmon during seasonal runs; it is a base for sport and commercial fishing and for wildlife viewing. Part of the lake shoreline adjoins Katmai National Park and Preserve, where visitor infrastructure supports bear viewing and river-based wildlife observation.

Local Indigenous peoples and later commercial fishers have relied on the lake and its rivers for subsistence and trade; in modern times the area is known for its salmon fisheries and as an access corridor to national park visitor sites such as Brooks Camp. The lake’s role in regional fishing has guided much of its contemporary use.

Geographically, Naknek Lake lies in southwestern Alaska on the Alaska Peninsula, adjacent to the communities of Naknek and King Salmon and within reach of air services that connect the area to larger Alaskan hubs.
