How to Get to Nakhchivan (city)

Nakhchivan is most easily reached by air via Nakhchivan International Airport (NAJ); frequent domestic flights link it with Baku. Overland rail connections are not available for passengers, while regional and cross‑border bus services connect the city with nearby towns and Iran.

By Air

Nakhchivan International Airport (NAJ): Nakhchivan’s airport is just outside the city (about 5-6 km). Taxis from the airport to the city centre take roughly 10-15 minutes; expect to pay around 5-12 AZN depending on whether you use the official airport taxi desk or a private taxi. Some hotels offer meeting-and-greet transfers for a similar price.

Heydar Aliyev International Airport, Baku (GYD): Most visitors come via domestic flights from Baku (flight time ~1 hour); AZAL and other carriers run daily services. Flights between Baku and Nakhchivan typically take about 55-70 minutes; fares vary widely by season and how far ahead you book, but domestic one-way tickets are commonly in the range of ~30-120 AZN. After landing at NAJ follow the local airport transfer options above.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no regular passenger rail service connecting Nakhchivan city to the rest of Azerbaijan at present. The historical rail links are not operating for passenger traffic, so trains are not a practical way to reach the city.

Bus: Nakhchivan’s central bus station (avtovagzal) handles regional coaches and marshrutka (shared minibus) services to nearby towns such as Ordubad, Julfa and Shahbuz, and there are less-frequent international services across the Iranian border (e.g., toward Tabriz). Regional travel times and prices vary: short routes to nearby districts are often 1-2 hours and commonly cost a few AZN (roughly 2-8 AZN); cross-border trips take longer and depend on border formalities (typically several hours and higher fares). For intra-city travel, local minibuses and municipal buses are the norm and are very inexpensive.

How to Get Around Nakhchivan (city)

The city is compact and best navigated by a mix of walking and short taxi rides; marshrutkas and municipal buses are the cheapest options for getting slightly farther afield. If you plan to explore the surrounding region, renting a car is the most flexible option.
