Nakanoshima

Nakanoshima is a narrow central island in the heart of Osaka located between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers. It functions as an urban cultural and business district with parks, museums and civic buildings concentrated along its length.

Cultural highlights include riverside green space, a historic red-brick public hall, and major museums for art and science; many office towers and hotels line the riverfront. The island’s promenades and bridges provide close-up views of Osaka’s river network and city skyline, and facilities are within easy walking distance.

The island developed as part of Osaka’s modern urban expansion and river engineering from the late 19th century into the 20th century, growing into a mixed-use district of cultural institutions and corporate offices. Several buildings on Nakanoshima reflect early 20th-century civic architecture and later modern museum development.

Nakanoshima sits in central Osaka Prefecture between the Umeda commercial area to the north and downtown Osaka to the south, connected by multiple road and rail links and many pedestrian bridges across the rivers.
