Nairai

Nairai is a small inhabited island in Fiji’s Eastern Division, part of the Lomaiviti island group. It is a rural community made up of several villages and customary chiefly structures.

The island offers traditional village life, small sandy beaches and coastal reef areas used for fishing. Agriculture is dominated by coconut and root-crop cultivation, and village visits typically focus on cultural exchange rather than tourist infrastructure.

Indigenous Fijian communities have occupied Nairai for generations; land is generally held and managed under customary tenure and local chiefs. The island’s social and economic patterns have changed slowly, with limited modern development.

Geographically it lies in the central Pacific within the Lomaiviti group, east of Fiji’s main island Viti Levu and connected to nearby islands by inter-island boat routes. The nearest larger centres are on other Lomaiviti islands and the capital, Suva, on Viti Levu across open sea.
