Mývatn
Lake Shallow volcanic lake renowned for birdlife and geology
A shallow lake and surrounding volcanic landscape with pseudocraters, lava fields and geothermal areas. Birdwatchers visit for nesting waterfowl; other visitors come for hiking, cave walks and bathing at local hot-spring facilities.
Mývatn is a shallow, nutrient-rich lake and surrounding volcanic landscape in northern Iceland noted for its geology and birdlife; the area formed during volcanic activity roughly two millennia ago. The lake and its environs are a major regional attraction for natural and geological features.
Extensive pseudocrater fields along the shoreline, the lava labyrinths and towers of Dimmuborgir, the steaming fumaroles and boiling grounds at Hverir, and geothermal bathing at the Mývatn Nature Baths. The area supports dense waterfowl populations and is well known for duck and shorebird observation in summer.
Volcanic activity from the nearby Krafla system has shaped the landscape in historical times, including eruptions and lava flows in the 20th century. Geothermal development and scientific monitoring have been active around the Krafla caldera since those events.
Mývatn lies in the Northeastern Region of Iceland, roughly east of Akureyri and accessed from the Ring Road; the lake sits amid low volcanic plateaus and lava fields at approximately 400 metres above sea level.
- Wildlife importance: The lake is shallow and biologically productive, famous for large populations of midges and rich birdlife including many duck species that use the lake as breeding habitat.
- Volcanic activity: Krafla, the volcanic system to the northeast, experienced notable eruptions during the "Krafla Fires" from 1975 to 1984 and remains geothermally active.
What to See #
- Hverir (geothermal area): A volcanic caldera and geothermal area with steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools and sulphur-stained ground that lies to the east of the lake and is one of the most active geothermal fields in the region.
- Dimmuborgir lava formations: A coastal area of lava-formed pillars and rock formations created by past eruptions, popular for short walks and photography of unusual volcanic shapes.
- Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters: Scattered shallow islands and pseudocraters along the lake margin that formed when lava flowed over wetlands and trapped steam; marked trails lead among these small crater forms.
- Mývatn Nature Baths: A modern geothermal spa located a short distance from the lake that offers bathing in heated mineral water with views over the Mývatn area.
How to Get to Mývatn #
