Myrmēkion

Myrmēkion is the site of an ancient Greek colony on the northeastern shore of the Black Sea near modern Kerch in Crimea. It dates to the archaic and classical periods of Greek colonization.

The site contains archaeological remains of settlement structures and fortifications along with burial grounds that reflect its role as a small but strategically located Greek emporium. Surface remains and excavations illustrate urban layout and material culture from antiquity.

Founded in the archaic-classical era by Greek colonists, the settlement functioned as a regional trading post and was integrated into Black Sea networks of commerce and cultural exchange. Archaeological work has identified habitation layers, defensive works and cemeteries.

Situated on the Crimean peninsula near Kerch on the Kerch Strait’s approaches, the site occupies a coastal position that once facilitated maritime connections across the northern Black Sea.
