Originating in the medieval period as a center for Rinzai Zen practice, the complex developed over centuries into a network of affiliated temples and training halls. It has remained an important institutional center for the Rinzai school.
The complex sits within Kyoto Prefecture in the city of Kyoto, occupying a sizable precinct northwest of Kyoto’s central districts.

How to Get to Myōshin-ji #
Myōshin-ji is a large temple complex in northwestern Kyoto. From Kyoto Station take the JR Sanin (Sagano) Line to Emmachi Station and then walk around 10-15 minutes to the temple complex, or use Kyoto city buses that stop near the Myōshin-ji area. By car it’s a short drive northwest from central Kyoto; local streets provide access and there is on-site or nearby parking for visitors.
