Mỹ Sơn
Archaeological Site Cluster of Hindu temple ruins of Cham kingdom
Mỹ Sơn’s red-brick temple towers recall the Champa kingdom; tourists take guided tours of the ruined sanctuaries, often arriving for sunrise photography and archaeological interpretation.
Mỹ Sơn is a cluster of Hindu temple towers built by the Champa kingdom between about the 4th and 13th centuries, located in Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex served as a religious and political centre for Champa.
The site is laid out as multiple groups of red-brick sanctuaries and towers, each group set within a clearing on a low valley floor. Group A contains the main surviving towers and the most elaborate carvings and reliefs; other groups show foundations and partial towers that illustrate the complex’s original extent. Interpretive trails and an on-site museum provide context for the Cham inscriptions and iconography.
Mỹ Sơn was constructed and expanded by successive Champa rulers from the early centuries of the first millennium until the 13th century, functioning as a religious centre devoted primarily to Shiva. The complex suffered extensive damage from bombing during the Vietnam War era; subsequent archaeological work and restoration have stabilized many ruins and reconstructed selected elements.
Mỹ Sơn sits inland in Quang Nam Province, in a small valley near present-day Duy Phú commune, accessible by road from coastal towns and cities in central Vietnam.
- Dates and layout: The complex consists of multiple groups of brick towers and sanctuaries built between the 4th and 13th centuries, concentrated in a small valley cleared of dense forest for tourism access.
- Damage and restoration: The site was heavily damaged during 20th-century bombing and has been the subject of international restoration and anastylosis projects.
What to See #
- Group A (main sanctuary): The main sanctuary group with the most complete and tallest brick towers, historically the central ceremonial zone of the complex.
- Groups B-F: Scattered smaller temple groups and foundations that illustrate the wider layout of the religious complex and its ritual precincts.
- Visitor centre and museum: On-site museum and interpretation centre that displays Cham artifacts and explains the site's archaeological context and preservation work.
