Mussenden Temple is an 18th century circular temple perched on a cliff near Castlerock in Northern Ireland. It is a landmark set within the Downhill Demesne coastal estate and is noted for its dramatic siting.
The temple is small and circular, with a colonnaded facade and a shallow dome, offering wide views over the Atlantic and Magilligan Strand. Visitors also use the estate paths for cliff-top walks and coastal vistas.
The temple was commissioned and built in 1785 by Frederick Augustus Hervey, the 4th Earl of Bristol, and was inspired by classical Roman temple forms. It has been preserved as part of the Downhill Demesne estate and is managed for public access.
Sited on a basalt cliff above the coast in County Londonderry, the temple lies close to the village of Castlerock and is accessible from the Causeway Coast area of Northern Ireland.
