Museum of Human Evolution Museum

The Museum of Human Evolution (Museo de la Evolución Humana) in Burgos, Castile and León, is a purpose-built museum dedicated to human evolution and to the archaeological finds from the Atapuerca sites. The current building opened in 2010 and blends exhibition spaces with research and conservation facilities.

Galleries present fossil specimens, replicas and contextual exhibits that trace hominin development from early species to modern humans, with displays drawn directly from Atapuerca deposits. The museum includes interactive displays and educational installations designed to explain archaeological methods and evolutionary science.

The museum was created to house and interpret the scientific results of excavations at the nearby Atapuerca sites and to provide a public centre for ongoing research. Its formation formalised collaboration between archaeologists, palaeoanthropologists and regional authorities.

The museum sits in the city of Burgos in northern Spain, close to the historic centre and the Arlanzón river, making it accessible from other regional towns and cities by road and rail.
