Museum of Byzantine Culture

The Museum of Byzantine Culture is a major museum in Thessaloniki, Greece, focused on Byzantine and post-Byzantine art and material culture. Its current building opened in the 1990s and it is an important center for Byzantine studies.

Rooms present liturgical objects, icons, mosaics, carved stonework and everyday items from roughly the 4th to the 15th century, arranged to explain religious, social and artistic developments. Exhibitions include large-scale finds and many works of ecclesiastical art, with contextual labels and reconstructions to aid understanding.

The museum was founded to assemble, conserve and display the region’s Byzantine heritage and to support research into Byzantine culture. Since opening it has expanded its collection through archaeological finds, transfers from other institutions and loans.

Located in central Thessaloniki in the region of Central Macedonia, the museum sits within the city and is accessible from Thessaloniki’s main transport links and port area.
