The Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda form a linked late Roman monumental complex in the historic centre of Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia. The group dates to the early 4th century and is associated with the emperor Galerius.

The site includes a large cylindrical structure with a broad, vaulted interior and an adjacent monumental arch. Visitors can see the Rotunda’s interior decoration and the surviving carved panels and masonry of the arch and nearby palace foundations. The Rotunda’s interior mosaics and the arch reliefs are the main highlights within a compact archaeological ensemble.

The complex was commissioned by the emperor Galerius in the early 4th century as part of his imperial building program and to commemorate his victories. Over time the Rotunda was converted into a Christian church and later used as a mosque under Ottoman rule before becoming a preserved historic monument and museum site.

The monuments sit in central Thessaloniki, within the city’s historic core and archaeological district, a short walk from major civic squares and other Roman and Byzantine remains.

• Rotunda mosaics: Interior access allows viewing of early Byzantine mosaics and the Rotunda’s vaulted interior, which are best seen when the building is open to visitors.
• Arch reliefs: Sculpted relief panels from the triumphal arch are displayed in situ and in nearby museums for closer study.

• Galerian palace remains: Remains of the late Roman imperial palace complex that occupied this area of the ancient city, visible as archaeological deposits and foundation walls around the Arch and Rotunda.

The site is in central Thessaloniki near the city center; a short walk from Aristotelous Square or from the central bus routes. The Thessaloniki bus network serves stops nearby and the port is a 10-20 minute walk.
