The German-Russian Museum Berlin-Karlshorst occupies the building where the German Instrument of Surrender was signed on 8 May 1945 and focuses on the German-Soviet conflict of World War II. It documents wartime events, occupation and post-war legacies.

Permanent displays trace the course of the Eastern Front with photographs, documents, uniforms and personal accounts; the historic surrender room is a central exhibit. Temporary exhibitions, lectures and educational programmes expand on specific aspects of wartime history and reconciliation.

The building served as a Wehrmacht officers’ mess and in May 1945 became the site where German forces on the Eastern Front surrendered to Soviet representatives. The site was later converted into a museum to document the history and consequences of the German-Soviet war.

The museum stands in the Karlshorst district in eastern Berlin, accessible by public transport and located within a residential area that preserves other memorial and educational sites related to wartime history.

Take S‑Bahn line S3 or S9 to Berlin-Karlshorst station; it’s a 10-15 minute walk north on Treskowallee and Zwieseler Straße. Alternatively Tram 21/27 stop Karlshorst Bhf-Ringbahn; the museum is signposted from the tram stops.

• Start in the surrender room-small and boxed-then work outward to the Soviet and German perspectives.
• Combine with a tram ride: take Tram M17 to Karlshorst for a neighborhood that still feels post-war Berlin.
• Avoid weekend midday when school groups arrive; weekday mornings are quieter.
