The Museo Nazionale Romano is a multi-branch state museum in Rome dedicated to ancient Roman art and archaeology, with major sites distributed across the city.

Collections are displayed in several distinct locations and include Roman sculpture, portraiture, mosaics, frescoes, everyday objects and archaeological material uncovered from urban excavations. Each branch presents different chronological and thematic emphases ranging from elite art and sculpture to urban archaeology and the reuse of ancient structures.

The institution brings together collections and archaeological finds assembled by the state during the 19th and 20th centuries to document the material culture of ancient Rome. Many holdings derive from excavations and private collections incorporated into the national museum network.

The museum’s branches are sited in central Rome, including near Termini station (Palazzo Massimo), in the historic centre (Palazzo Altemps and Crypta Balbi) and at the archaeological complex of the Baths of Diocletian.

  • Multiple sites: The Museo Nazionale Romano operates across several separate sites in Rome, each focused on different aspects of ancient Roman art, archaeology and urban history.
