Museo dell’Opera del Duomo sits beside Florence Cathedral, displaying original sculptures, façade pieces and cathedral models that document Brunelleschi’s dome and the building’s construction history.
The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence preserves and displays original artworks and architectural elements from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery and the campanile. The collection focuses on sculptures, doors, reliefs and models that were removed from the exterior to prevent damage.
The original gilded panels by Lorenzo Ghiberti (the Gates of Paradise) and major sculptural works associated with the cathedral complex, including the Michelangelo Pietà. Exhibits are arranged to show both finished works and architectural fragments with explanatory material on their original locations.
The museum was created to conserve and interpret the cathedral’s artistic heritage and has been adapted over time as conservation needs required the transfer of fragile originals indoors. It is located immediately adjacent to the Duomo and the Baptistery in Florence’s Piazza del Duomo.

It’s in the heart of Florence - a 2-5 minute walk from the Cathedral and about 10-15 minutes on foot (around 800-1,000 m) from Firenze Santa Maria Novella station; taxis can drop you at the piazza.
By road the museum is reached via the pedestrianised streets around the cathedral (Via della Canonica/Via del Proconsolo area); as with other central Florence sites, park outside the ZTL or use public transport and walk in.
