Main image

The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence preserves and displays original artworks and architectural elements from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery and the campanile. The collection focuses on sculptures, doors, reliefs and models that were removed from the exterior to prevent damage.

The original gilded panels by Lorenzo Ghiberti (the Gates of Paradise) and major sculptural works associated with the cathedral complex, including the Michelangelo Pietà. Exhibits are arranged to show both finished works and architectural fragments with explanatory material on their original locations.

The museum was created to conserve and interpret the cathedral’s artistic heritage and has been adapted over time as conservation needs required the transfer of fragile originals indoors. It is located immediately adjacent to the Duomo and the Baptistery in Florence’s Piazza del Duomo.

  • Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise: The museum preserves original fittings from the Florence Cathedral complex, including Ghiberti's east doors known as the Gates of Paradise.
  • Conservation and display: Recent conservation work has moved several major sculptures indoors to this museum to protect them from pollution and weathering.

Tips for Visiting Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (Florence) #

  • Buy a combined Opera del Duomo ticket in advance and plan the Museo dell'Opera before or after other Duomo monuments-seeing the originals (including Ghiberti panels and damaged cathedral sculptures) gives important context for the cathedral and baptistery replicas outside.
  • Visit early or late in the day: the museum is often quieter than the cathedral plaza at those times, letting you study the carved details up close without the big crowds that swarm the Duomo square midday.
