Museo de Málaga
Museum City museum in Málaga housing archaeology and art
Housed in the 18th-century Palacio de la Aduana, Museo de Málaga displays archaeological finds and fine-art collections spanning Málaga’s Roman, Phoenician and Andalusian history.
Museo de Málaga is a city museum in Málaga, Andalusia, that brings together the province’s archaeology and fine arts collections under one roof. The institution reopened in its current form in 2016 in the restored Palacio de la Aduana.
Galleries cover archaeological material from prehistoric eras through Roman and medieval periods alongside painting and sculpture collections that extend into the modern era. The displays combine artefacts, sculpture and paintings to chart Málaga’s regional history and artistic development.
The museum was formed by merging the provincial archaeology and fine arts collections and installing them in the Palacio de la Aduana, a large historic customs building that was restored and adapted for museum use. The consolidated museum opened to the public in 2016.
Situated on Plaza de la Aduana in central Málaga, the museum is close to the port area and within walking distance of the Alcazaba, the Roman theatre and the Picasso Museum.

Tips for Visiting Museo de Málaga #
- Arrive early (9:30-10:30) to see the archaeology galleries before tour groups from cruise ships arrive.
- Start in the Archaeology section (Aduana building) and finish in the Fine Arts halls - the layout encourages a chronological stroll.
- Look for the Roman anchors and the 17.7-meter Roman mosaic of Baetica; the labels sometimes assume prior knowledge, so pause at object cases rather than race through.
