Munttoren
Building Historic Amsterdam tower formerly a mint house
On Amsterdam’s Muntplein, the 17th-century Munttoren faces the Amstel; tourists visit the historic clocktower, canalside views and the nearby flower market.
The Munttoren is a 17th century clock tower on Muntplein in central Amsterdam that was built on the site of a medieval city gate. It acquired its name after being used to mint coins in the 17th century.
The tower retains its historic clock and carillon and forms an architectural landmark at the junction of canals and streets near the flower market. The current tower dates largely from early 17th century reconstruction following fire damage to the earlier gate structure.
Historically it was part of the city’s defensive gate complex and was adapted for minting operations during periods of coin shortage. Over the centuries it has served as a civic timepiece and urban landmark.
The Munttoren stands on Muntplein at the edge of Amsterdam’s canal ring, adjacent to the Amstel River and within walking distance of central squares and markets.
