Muntplein, Amsterdam

Muntplein is a small square in central Amsterdam at the point where the Amstel meets the Singel canal, dominated by the historic Munttoren (Mint Tower). The tower visible today dates from the early 17th century.

The square is a busy transit and meeting point framed by the Munttoren and the adjacent bridges and canals; it provides immediate access to the Kalverstraat shopping street and nearby canal-side routes. Photographers often use the square for views of the tower and passing waterways.

The Munttoren was originally part of a medieval city gate and was rebuilt after a destructive fire in the early 1600s; it later served as a mint in the 17th century, giving the tower and square their name. The site has long been a junction for river traffic and urban development.
