How to Get to Mulhacén #

Mulhacén lies in the Sierra Nevada, Andalusia. The usual vehicle approach is from Granada: follow the A-92/A-395 south-east from Granada into the Sierra Nevada toward the ski resort of Pradollano/Hoya de la Mora - driving from Granada to the mountain road takes roughly 40-60 minutes depending on destination and conditions.

From the Hoya de la Mora / Pradollano area or from Alpujarra villages such as Capileira you begin the marked mountain trails to Mulhacén; expect several kilometres of uphill hiking from the nearest roadheads and prepared parking areas.

Tips for Visiting Mulhacén #

  • Start very early (pre-dawn if you plan a summit sunrise) to beat the heat in summer and the typical late-morning crowds on popular approaches.
  • Common and practical ascents begin from the Alpujarras side (Capileira area) where routes and the Refugio Poqueira provide established access-check local trail reports for conditions, especially if snow remains.
  • Check Sierra Nevada park / local mountain-weather information before you go; snow can persist into late spring and conditions at altitude change quickly.

Best Time to Visit Mulhacén #

Late spring through early autumn (June-September) is the safest and most approachable time to visit Mulhacén; winter conditions are alpine and often dangerous.

Summer (best for non-snow ascent)
June-September · Summit ~5-15°C; valleys warmer
Most reliable period for hiking and approaching the summit without extensive snow and ice; long daylight hours help multi-stage ascents.
Spring/Autumn
April-May, October · Summit around 0-10°C
Can offer good conditions but expect possible snow patches and rapidly changing weather - suitable for experienced, well-equipped hikers.
Winter
November-March · Summit often below freezing
Heavy snowfall and ice make winter ascents technical and hazardous; only for experienced winter mountaineers with proper equipment.
