Mudumalai National Park is a protected wildlife area on the northwestern slopes of the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu, India, forming part of the larger Nilgiri Biosphere landscape. It is known for tropical dry deciduous forests and a mix of grassland and scrub habitats that support large mammals.
Key attractions are guided jeep safaris and sightings of Asian elephant, tiger, leopard, Indian gaur, sambar and other ungulates and birds. The reserve includes established forest camps and village-edge safari zones where wildlife is commonly encountered.
The area was set aside for wildlife conservation during the 20th century and is managed as part of regional conservation initiatives linking neighbouring protected areas in Karnataka and Kerala. Management focuses on habitat protection, anti-poaching and regulated tourism.
Mudumalai lies on the western fringe of the Nilgiri plateau in the state of Tamil Nadu, near the towns of Ooty and Gudalur; the landscape is a transition between lowland plains and higher montane forests.
- Best time for wildlife: Safaris are the primary way to see wildlife; early morning and late afternoon drives give the best chance of sightings of elephants, gaurs and carnivores.
- Protected landscape: The park forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and borders Bandipur National Park (Karnataka) and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala), creating a large contiguous landscape for wide-ranging species.
What to See #
- Theppakadu Elephant Camp: A longstanding forest department camp and visitor hub where jeep safaris and guided tours are organised and elephant handling demonstrations are held.
- Masinagudi sector: A popular safari and village-edge area with grasslands and forest mosaics that frequently yields sightings of Asian elephants and deer.

Tips for Visiting Mudumalai National Park #
- Book an early-morning jeep safari from Theppakadu or the official Mudumalai range office to maximize wildlife sightings when animals are most active and to avoid the heavier midday visitor flow.
- Choose weekday safaris or less-publicized ranges if possible, and ask the range office which compartments are currently quieter-popular ranges fill quickly and different compartments have different recent sighting histories.
- Visit outside the southwest monsoon months if you need reliable jeep-road access; the dry season (roughly November-April) generally offers better track conditions and more predictable safari operations.
