How to Get to Mudanjiang
Mudanjiang is reachable by air via Mudanjiang Hailang Airport (MDG) and by rail via Mudanjiang Railway Station (and Mudanjiang West for some faster services). The airport is connected to the city by shuttle buses and taxis; regional rail and long-distance coach networks link Mudanjiang with Harbin and other cities in Heilongjiang.
Mudanjiang Hailang Airport (MDG): The city is served by Mudanjiang Hailang Airport (MDG). From the airport to the city centre there is an airport shuttle bus (approx. CNY 15; around 40-50 minutes to central Mudanjiang / Mudanjiang Railway Station) and taxis/Didi (approx. CNY 60-80; about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic). Taxis charge by meter; Didi app works in the city for private-car and taxi hails.
Train: Mudanjiang is served by Mudanjiang Railway Station (牡丹江站) and Mudanjiang West (牡丹江西站) on regional and higher-speed services. Key routes include regular trains to Harbin, Suifenhe and Qiqihar; fares vary by service (conventional trains and slower expresses can be from around CNY 20-120, faster high-speed/CR services typically CNY 60-150) and journey times depend on service type (for example, Harbin-Mudanjiang journeys typically take a few hours depending on train type). Use the China Railway 12306 site/app or station counters to buy tickets.
Bus: Long-distance coaches run from Mudanjiang’s long-distance bus stations to regional destinations (Harbin, Jixi, Suifenhe etc.); typical intercity coach fares are roughly CNY 30-120 with journey times of a few hours depending on distance. Within the city, an extensive city-bus network serves neighbourhoods with fares usually around CNY 1-3 per ride.
How to Get Around Mudanjiang
Getting around Mudanjiang is easiest by taxi/Didi for convenience and by city bus for the cheapest fares. For intercity travel, trains and long-distance coaches both serve the city - trains are faster for longer distances while coaches can be more direct for certain regional routes.
- Train (Intercity & High-speed) (CNY 20-150) - Mudanjiang Railway Station and Mudanjiang West handle most intercity services. Trains connect Mudanjiang with Harbin, Suifenhe and other regional hubs; travel times and prices vary widely by service class. Buy tickets on the 12306 app or at station counters and book ahead during Chinese holidays.
- Long-distance Bus (CNY 30-120) - Regional and intercity coaches depart from the city's main long-distance bus stations to Harbin, Jixi, Suifenhe and border towns. Coaches are often frequent and economical for routes not well served by rail - expect journey times of a few hours depending on destination. Buses can be purchased at station booths or via local ticketing apps.
- Airport transfer (shuttle & taxi) (CNY 15-80) - Mudanjiang Hailang Airport is linked to downtown by an airport shuttle bus (inexpensive, around CNY 15, roughly 40-50 minutes) and by metered taxis/Didi (typically around CNY 60-80 to the centre, 30-40 minutes). Arrive with local-currency cash or use mobile payment apps; luggage-friendly taxis are the fastest option.
- Taxi & Didi (CNY 10-60) - Taxis are plentiful in Mudanjiang and metered fares are reasonable for short trips across town; Didi also operates and is convenient if you have the app. Night surcharges and waiting-time fees can apply; for airport runs expect higher fares than inner-city trips. Taxis are usually the most convenient way to reach destinations not on main bus routes.
- City Bus (CNY 1-3) - The city-bus network is the cheapest way to get around central Mudanjiang; most single rides cost around CNY 1-3. Buses cover major roads and neighborhoods but can be slow in peak hours. Have exact change or a local transit card/Alipay/WeChat for contactless payment where accepted.
- Bicycle / E-bike share (CNY 1-5) - Shared bicycles and electric bike services are commonly available and useful for short trips in flat parts of the city; fares are low (small unlock fee plus per-minute charges). They're economical and often faster than buses for short distances, but watch for winter conditions - services may be reduced in cold months.
- Walking - Central Mudanjiang is compact enough for walking between many attractions, shops and restaurants; sidewalks are generally present though conditions vary by neighbourhood. Walking is the best way to explore market areas and the riverside; dress for the weather (cold winters) and allow extra time for winter conditions.
