Muchinga Mountains
Mountains Mountain range forming Zambia's eastern watershed region
An upland range in Muchinga Province of eastern Zambia, the Muchinga Mountains form local highlands and escarpments used for hiking, rural travel and studies of regional ecosystems.
The Muchinga Mountains are a mountain range in northeastern Zambia that lend their name to Muchinga Province and form a prominent highland escarpment in the region.
A relatively little-visited upland, the range features steep escarpments, valleys and upland plateaus that offer remote hiking and scenic viewpoints rather than developed tourist facilities. Vegetation ranges from miombo woodland on lower slopes to montane grassland and patches of forest at higher elevations.
Geologically the range marks a regional uplift and has long served as a physical barrier and drainage divide that influences local river courses and settlement patterns. Human use of the highlands has been predominantly pastoral, subsistence agriculture and local transport corridors.
Geographically the range runs roughly north-south across eastern Zambia, forming part of the boundary between the Luangwa and adjacent river basins and sitting inland from the Zambian plateau.
- Watershed role: Forms a north-south highland that gives its name to Muchinga Province and functions as a watershed between major river systems in Zambia.
