Mtirala National Park is a protected area in the Adjara region of Georgia on the wet, forested slopes above the Black Sea coast. The park preserves humid broadleaf and mixed forests that support rich plant and animal communities.

Well-marked trails take visitors to waterfalls, forested ravines and viewpoints across the park; the landscape is noted for persistent mist and frequent rainfall that feed streams and falls. The area is important for conservation of Colchic-type forest species and provides habitat for numerous birds and plants.

Protection measures have emphasized maintaining the park’s native forest cover and permitting controlled visitor access to key trails and natural attractions. Local visitor facilities and trailheads provide access from nearby towns on the coastal plain.

Mtirala lies inland from the Black Sea near the cities of Batumi and Kobuleti in southwestern Georgia, occupying steep, forested country above the coastal plain.

How to Get to Mtirala National Park #

Mtirala National Park in Adjara is reached from the Black Sea coastal towns of Batumi and Kobuleti. Drive north from Batumi along the main coastal road (S2/E70) toward Kobuleti and the Chakvi/Mtirala area (the park is relatively close to Kobuleti); regular marshrutka (minibus) services run between Batumi and Kobuleti/Chakvi from Batumi’s bus stops, and from those villages you can drive or walk short distances to park trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Mtirala National Park #

  • Visit outside the heaviest rains (late spring through early autumn) - Mtirala is one of Georgia's wettest parks and the trails get very muddy and slippery in the rainier months.
  • Approach the park from Batumi or Kobuleti to keep drives short and to access the main trailheads and visitor information more easily; many day visitors base themselves in Batumi and make short trips into the park.
  • Hike early on weekdays to avoid weekend crowds from Batumi, and be sure to include one of the short side trails to waterfalls or canopy viewpoints that many people skip on quick visits.
