How to Get to Mrkopalj
Mrkopalj is best reached by road from Rijeka or Zagreb; Rijeka Airport (RJK) is the nearest airport while Zagreb (ZAG) offers many more international flights. The regional rail stop is Delnice, but last-mile travel is usually by local bus or taxi.
Rijeka Airport (RJK): Rijeka (on the island of Krk) is the closest airport for Gorski Kotar towns like Mrkopalj; the airport sits ~40-50 km from Mrkopalj by road and the drive takes roughly 45-60 minutes depending on snow/road conditions. Taxis and airport transfers are the most practical option from RJK; scheduled public buses are limited outside the summer season.
Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport (ZAG): Zagreb is the main international gateway for inland Gorski Kotar. A shuttle bus from ZAG to Zagreb’s main bus station takes about 30-40 minutes (one-way shuttle fares are commonly around 40 HRK). From Zagreb you can continue by intercity bus or train toward Delnice and then local buses or taxis to Mrkopalj.
Train: The nearest main rail stop is Delnice on the Zagreb-Rijeka line (served by Croatian Railways/HŽ). Trains connect Delnice with Zagreb and Rijeka; from Delnice a local taxi or bus is needed for the last stretch up to Mrkopalj (the railway is useful for reaching the region but not the village centre).
Bus: Intercity buses run to Delnice and Rijeka from Zagreb and Rijeka bus stations (Autobusni kolodvor Zagreb / Autobusni kolodvor Rijeka).
