How to Get to Mpulungu

Mpulungu is a remote lakeside town and is normally reached overland after flying to a regional airport (Kasama or Mbala) or by long road transfer from Ndola/Lusaka. There are no regular large commercial flights to Mpulungu itself, so plan for a final road leg.

By Air

Kasama Airport (ZMK) / Mbala regional airstrips: Mpulungu is at Zambia’s northern tip on Lake Tanganyika and has no major commercial airport; the nearest scheduled-service airports are in Kasama and Mbala (both are regional). From either airport you complete the journey by road - expect multi-hour transfers depending on which field you fly into and road conditions.

Ndola / Lusaka: For international connections travellers often fly into Ndola or Lusaka and continue by road or internal flights to the Northern Province before the final road leg to Mpulungu. This is typically a multi-stage journey requiring careful planning.

By Train & Bus

Train: Passenger rail services are limited in the far north and are generally not a reliable option for reaching Mpulungu.

Bus / Minibus: Road transport from Kasama, Mbala or other Northern Province towns is the standard way to reach Mpulungu. Minibuses and hired vehicles handle the final legs; allow extra time for road conditions and seasonal variability.

How to Get Around Mpulungu #

Mpulungu is compact and easy to explore on foot around the lakeshore and main streets. It’s a working port town, so small taxis and motorbikes handle local trips; boat services and passenger ferries are important for connections along Lake Tanganyika. If you plan to travel by boat, check schedules ahead as services can be infrequent and weather-dependent. Bring cash and permit documents if arranging cross-border boat travel.

Nightlife in Mpulungu #

Shopping in Mpulungu #

Shopping in Mpulungu is basic: local markets, small shops and fishing-related suppliers meet day-to-day needs. You’ll find fresh fish and locally made goods rather than boutiques or specialty stores. For larger purchases or specialised items, larger Zambian towns are required.
