Mozu Tombs
Tomb Ancient Kofun burial mounds complex, UNESCO site
The Mozu tombs near Sakai comprise large kofun burial mounds, including keyhole-shaped tumuli; visitors come to study ancient Japanese funerary architecture and UNESCO-recognized archaeological remains.
The Mozu Tombs are a group of large burial mounds in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, forming part of the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group and dating to the Kofun period (roughly 4th-6th centuries AD). They include some of Japan’s largest keyhole-shaped kofun and are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The site is dominated by massive earthen mounds and surrounding moats; the largest, Daisen Kofun (often identified with Emperor Nintoku), measures about 486 metres in length and is clearly visible from nearby lookout points. Visitors follow marked paths and parkland corridors that allow exterior viewing, photography and interpretation panels explaining mound shapes and construction.
The tombs were constructed by regional elites during the Kofun period and served as elite burial complexes. Over centuries the mounds have been partially altered by agriculture and urban growth, but 20th and 21st-century preservation efforts and archaeological study have clarified their layouts and ceremonial significance.
The Mozu cluster lies in the southern part of Sakai city, on the coastal plain just south of central Osaka - roughly a short drive or train ride from central Osaka - set within an urban and suburban landscape with parkland and museums nearby.
- Access: Most tombs are not open for internal access; the Imperial Household Agency restricts entry to many mounded tombs, so viewing is from perimeter paths and designated lookout points.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed as the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019, recognising the scale and variety of kofun built in the 4th-6th centuries AD.
What to See #
- Daisen Kofun: The largest tumulus in the group, commonly called the Daisen Kofun or Nintoku-ryo Kofun, is a keyhole-shaped mound about 486 metres long surrounded by multiple moats and visible earthworks.
- Sakai City Museum: Sakai City Museum sits adjacent to the Mozu cluster and presents archaeological finds, maps and scaled reconstructions that explain kofun construction and chronology.
How to Get to Mozu Tombs #
Take the JR Hanwa Line from Tennoji or Osaka stations to Mozu Station (Sakai). From Mozu Station it’s a short walk (roughly 10-15 minutes) to the main tumuli area and the Sakai City Museum; local signage and paths lead between the key kofun sites. By car, the Mozu Kofun Group lies in Sakai city south of central Osaka and is straightforward to reach via the city roads serving Sakai.
Tips for Visiting Mozu Tombs #
- Plan to visit early morning on a weekday when the large kofun are quiet; the biggest tombs (Daisenryo Kofun / Emperor Nintoku's mound) are view-only, so arriving early gives unobstructed photo angles from the observation points.
- Use the Sakai City Museum as your starting point - it sits beside several major tumuli and provides historical context and maps that make a self-guided walk far more meaningful.
- Cycle or walk between clusters rather than relying solely on road viewpoints; many smaller kofun and quieter lanes are missed by bus tours but are easy to reach by bike from the museum area.
- Respect access restrictions: several kofun are imperial or protected sites and are not open to the public, so stick to official paths and observation areas to avoid fines and disturbance.
