Mousa, Shetland
Island Shetland island dominated by well-preserved Iron Age broch
Mousa in Shetland is a small island reached by boat, famous for its Iron Age broch-the best-preserved in Scotland-and for seabird colonies; visitors come for archaeology and birdwatching.
Mousa is a small, uninhabited island off the east coast of Mainland Shetland, Scotland, notable for its exceptionally complete Iron Age broch. The broch is among the tallest and best-preserved examples of this native Scottish tower-house type.
The broch rises directly from the rock and reaches roughly 13.3 metres in height; its thick drystone walls include intramural galleries and steps that survive to the top. Natural coastal habitat around the broch supports large seabird colonies, making the island of interest to both archaeology and wildlife visitors.
The structure was built in the Iron Age and later periods saw intermittent use and visitation, but the broch remains largely intact compared with most other examples. Conservation has focused on stabilizing the stonework and preserving its fabric for public access.
Mousa sits close to the east coast of Mainland Shetland in the northern isles of Scotland and is typically visited by small boat from nearby harbors on Mainland Shetland; landing depends on tidal and weather conditions.
- Interior access: The broch interior contains narrow intramural galleries and a stair; vertical movement is possible but the stone steps are steep and uneven.
- Access: The island is reached by boat only and landing can be difficult in rough weather, so visits depend on calm sea conditions.
What to See #
- Mousa Broch: A single, exceptionally well-preserved Iron Age broch that stands about 13.3 metres tall and retains substantial walling and internal galleries.
- Seabird colonies and coastline: Rocky shores and coastal grassland on the island support significant seabird colonies, including puffins and guillemots during the breeding season.
