Mount Wutai (Wutai Shan) in Shanxi province is one of Chinas Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and a major pilgrimage centre known for its five flat-topped peaks. It is recognised for the high concentration of historic monasteries and temples on its slopes.
The site contains dozens of temples and monastic complexes clustered around the five main summits; routes and pilgrimage paths link these complexes, and visitors commonly explore major monasteries such as Xiantong and Tayuan. The peaks provide alpine scenery and walking routes at a range of elevations.
Temples and religious activity on Wutai date back many centuries, with imperial patronage and extensive rebuilding over successive dynasties. The mountain grew into a major Buddhist centre and was later inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site reflecting its cultural and religious importance.
Geographically, Mount Wutai sits in northeastern Shanxi province, in a high, open area of ridges and plateaus. The massif dominates the surrounding countryside and is accessed by roads and small towns that serve pilgrims and tourists.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its religious and historic significance and for the concentration of monasteries and temples.
- Weather and season: Many temples and monasteries sit at elevations above the valley floor; weather can be cold and snowy outside the main summer season, so plan accordingly.

- Tayuan Temple: Known for its conspicuous white stupa, this temple complex is a prominent pilgrimage site and a frequent stop on tourist circuits around the mountain.

Tips for Visiting Mount Wutai #
- Base yourself in Taihuai town when visiting Mount Wutai - most major monasteries, guesthouses and visitor facilities are concentrated there, which reduces daily travel time between temples.
- Attend an early-morning monastery prayer session or visit temples at dawn to experience the atmosphere before tour groups arrive; be prepared to observe local rules on dress and silence and always ask before photographing inside.
