Mount Vesuvius
Volcano Active volcano overlooking the Bay of Naples
Mount Vesuvius overlooks the Bay of Naples; tourists hike to the crater rim for panorama, study volcanic geology, and combine visits with nearby archaeological sites such as Pompeii.
Mount Vesuvius is an active stratovolcano on the Gulf of Naples in southern Italy, renowned for its eruption in AD 79 that buried the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is one of Europe’s most closely monitored volcanoes.
The summit area includes the main crater with hiking trails allowing visitors to view the crater rim and look down into the volcanic depression. The mountain dominates the surrounding landscape and provides panoramic views over Naples and the Bay of Naples on clear days.
Vesuvius’s most famous eruption occurred in AD 79, but it has produced multiple eruptions in the centuries since; the volcano’s activity has shaped regional settlement and geology. Modern monitoring by Italian authorities tracks seismic and gas signals to manage risk.
Located about 9 kilometres east of central Naples, Vesuvius rises from the Sorrento Peninsula and is accessed from towns on its slopes such as Ercolano and Torre del Greco.
- Summit access: A marked trail leads to the summit crater and the hike typically takes 30-60 minutes from the designated parking area; the rim offers views over the Bay of Naples and surrounding towns.
- Volcanic activity: Vesuvius is an active stratovolcano; local authorities may restrict access during periods of heightened volcanic activity and visitors should check warnings before travelling.
