Mount Vesuvius is an active stratovolcano on the Gulf of Naples in southern Italy, renowned for its eruption in AD 79 that buried the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is one of Europe’s most closely monitored volcanoes.

The summit area includes the main crater with hiking trails allowing visitors to view the crater rim and look down into the volcanic depression. The mountain dominates the surrounding landscape and provides panoramic views over Naples and the Bay of Naples on clear days.

Vesuvius’s most famous eruption occurred in AD 79, but it has produced multiple eruptions in the centuries since; the volcano’s activity has shaped regional settlement and geology. Modern monitoring by Italian authorities tracks seismic and gas signals to manage risk.

Located about 9 kilometres east of central Naples, Vesuvius rises from the Sorrento Peninsula and is accessed from towns on its slopes such as Ercolano and Torre del Greco.

  • Summit access: A marked trail leads to the summit crater and the hike typically takes 30-60 minutes from the designated parking area; the rim offers views over the Bay of Naples and surrounding towns.
  • Volcanic activity: Vesuvius is an active stratovolcano; local authorities may restrict access during periods of heightened volcanic activity and visitors should check warnings before travelling.

How to Get to Mount Vesuvius #

Mount Vesuvius overlooks Naples to the east. From Naples take the Circumvesuviana local railway toward Sorrento and alight at Ercolano or Pompei depending on which trailhead/shuttle you use; from those stations local buses, tourist shuttles or taxis run up toward the Vesuvius National Park entrance. From the park car park the marked trail to the crater rim is a steep walk of roughly 20-30 minutes. (Vesuvius lies a short drive east of Naples.)

Tips for Visiting Mount Vesuvius #

  • Go early in the morning for clearer views over the Bay of Naples and to avoid the heat and larger tour groups that arrive later in the day.
  • Take the Circumvesuviana train to Ercolano or Pompeii and then a short bus or taxi up to the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio trailhead rather than trying to drive the narrow access roads yourself.
  • Check the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio website before you go for current trail conditions, opening hours and any restrictions - sections of the crater trail can be closed for safety.
