Mount Vernon is the plantation home and estate long associated with George Washington, located on the banks of the Potomac River in Virginia. It served as Washington’s primary residence and the centre of his domestic and agricultural operations until his death in 1799.

The site includes the restored manor house, interpreted slave quarters and exhibition spaces, formal gardens, and reconstructed farm buildings. Visitors commonly take guided mansion tours, walk the riverside grounds and visit the museum and education centre that display objects, documents and exhibits about Washington’s life and 18th-century plantation management.

George Washington oversaw major building and landscaping projects at Mount Vernon during the second half of the 18th century; the site remained in family hands until the mid-19th century when the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association acquired and began long-term preservation. The estate now functions as one of the best-preserved early American presidential homes with ongoing research and interpretation.

Mount Vernon sits on the Potomac River near the historic town of Alexandria and is within commuting distance of the Washington, D.C. area, roughly 16 miles (about 26 kilometres) south of the U.S. capital. The site is accessed from Route 235 and by water access from the Potomac in some seasons.

  • Preservation: The estate is managed as a historic house museum and was saved from private sale by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, which purchased and began preserving the property in 1858.
  • Visitor logistics: Guided tours of the mansion and grounds are the main visitor experience; seasonal opening hours and timed-entry tickets are commonly used during peak periods.
