Religious Site Northern Japan alpine peak revered for sacred shrines
Part of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains, Mount Tate (Tateyama) sits in the Northern Japan Alps and anchors the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Visitors ride mountain buses and cable cars, hike alpine trails and see the spring snow corridor.
Mount Tate (Tateyama) is a major peak in the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps) of Toyama Prefecture and is counted among Japan’s Three Holy Mountains. It reaches alpine elevations around 3,000 m and is a center for both mountain worship and alpine tourism.
The area around Mount Tate includes alpine features such as the Murodo plateau and Mikurigaike Pond, and it forms part of the popular Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route which links Toyama and Nagano prefectures. In spring the route is famous for its high snow walls on the Murodo approach, and the mountain area contains small shrine sites associated with traditional pilgrimage.
Historically Tateyama has been a focus of religious practice and mountain asceticism in Japan; the mountain’s shrines and pilgrimage routes date back many centuries. Geographically it sits in the Hida range of Toyama Prefecture and is accessed by the Alpine Route transport system that brings visitors to high-elevation trailheads.
- Religious status: One of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" alongside Mount Fuji and Mount Hakusan, with a long history of religious significance and pilgrimage.
- Access and seasonal attraction: Accessible via the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which provides staged transport up to high-altitude access points and seasonal spring snow corridors with very high walls of snow.
What to See #
- Murodo plateau: Murodo plateau, a high alpine plateau at the foot of the summit that serves as the main visitor hub on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and is famous for its spring snow corridor.
- Mikurigaike Pond: Mikurigaike Pond, a scenic alpine pond near the Murodo area that is a common viewpoint and short walk for visitors on the route.
- Tateyama Shrine: Tateyama Shrine and small shrine structures on the mountain that reflect the area's history of mountain worship and pilgrimage.
