Mount Tai (Tai Shan) is a culturally significant mountain in Shandong province, eastern China, long revered in Chinese history and religion. Its highest summit reaches about 1,545 metres and the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 for its cultural importance.
The ascent contains a dense sequence of temples, stone inscriptions, ceremonial gateways and paved stairways; notable stops include imperial temple complexes and the summit area at Jade Emperor Peak. Many visitors travel established routes that offer a mixture of steep stone steps and paved paths, with viewpoints and historic buildings at intervals.
Mount Tai has been a focus of religious rites, imperial sacrifices and pilgrimage for millennia and contains architectural and epigraphic evidence spanning many dynasties. It developed as an imperial ceremonial mountain with temples and stone carvings added and maintained over successive historical periods.
The mountain rises above the city of Tai’an in southern Shandong province, forming a dominant local landmark and cultural destination within easy travel from regional urban centres in Shandong.
