Mount Tabor is an isolated hill in Israel’s Lower Galilee near Nazareth that rises from the surrounding plains and is traditionally identified by many Christians as the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus. It is a prominent religious and landscape landmark in the region.

The summit is occupied by multiple churches and monastic buildings, including a prominent Catholic basilica and an active Greek Orthodox monastery, both of which draw pilgrims and visitors. The hill provides clear, elevated views over the Jezreel Valley and local countryside.

Mount Tabor has been fortified and used at various times across history, including in the Byzantine and Crusader periods, and remains a site of ongoing pilgrimage and worship.

The hill stands east of Nazareth and above the fertile plains of the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel, accessible by road and short walking trails to the summit.

  • Panoramic views: The summit offers panoramic views over the Jezreel Valley and surrounding Lower Galilee, making it a common viewpoint for landscape photography and short visits.

What to See #

  • Church of the Transfiguration (Catholic basilica): A 19th-century Franciscan church and basilica built on the summit that commemorates the Transfiguration tradition and provides an interior sanctuary and chapels.
  • Greek Orthodox monastery: An active Greek Orthodox monastery and associated chapels on the summit complex, part of the long-standing Christian religious presence on the hill.
