North of Lake Van in Bitlis Province, Mount Süphan is a high volcanic peak favored by hikers and climbers for multi‑day routes and wide views across eastern Turkey.
Mount Süphan is a stratovolcano in eastern Turkey’s Bitlis Province, rising to approximately 4,058 meters (13,314 feet). It is located north of Lake Van and is one of the region’s dominant high peaks.
The mountain features steep flanks and volcanic geology typical of the Armenian Highlands and is a destination for mountaineers and hikers during summer months. Snow can persist at higher elevations through much of the year.
Süphan is an extinct or dormant volcanic structure of the highland volcanic province; its formation and flows date from Pliocene to Pleistocene volcanic activity. Human use has centered on pastoralism and seasonal trekking rather than ongoing volcanism.
Geographically it rises above the northern shore of Lake Van in eastern Turkey, within Bitlis Province. The nearest larger settlements include Tatvan and Ahlat on Lake Van’s western and northwestern shores.

How to Get to Mount Süphan #
Mount Süphan (Süphan Dağı) lies north of Lake Van in eastern Turkey and is commonly approached from the lakeshore towns of Tatvan or Ahlat. Both Tatvan and Ahlat are served by intercity buses from Van and other regional centres; from those towns you drive on local roads toward the mountain and use unpaved/jeep tracks to reach trailheads. Local guides and 4x4 transport are commonly used for the final approach and ascent.
Tips for Visiting Mount Süphan #
- The common climbing and trekking season for Mount Süphan is the summer months (roughly June-September) when trails are snow-free and access from Lake Van is easiest.
- Most visitors stage from towns on Lake Van-Ahlat or Adilcevaz are practical base points for transport and local guides; arrange a local guide in Bitlis Province if you're unfamiliar with high-altitude navigation and route-finding.
- To avoid the busiest weekends and to improve summit chances, start very early from your chosen base and allow an extra day for acclimatization; the summit offers expansive views of Lake Van that are best at sunrise or late afternoon.
