Mount St. Helens
Mountain Active Washington volcano known for 1980 catastrophic eruption
Mount St. Helens in Washington State attracts hikers and geology visitors to the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Johnston Ridge Observatory and trails that reveal the 1980 eruption’s effects.
Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano in southwestern Washington State, within the Cascade Range. It is best known for its major explosive eruption on May 18, 1980, which dramatically altered the summit and surrounding landscape.
The mountain remains an active volcanic system monitored by geological agencies and is visited for its eruption scars, ecological recovery zones, and interpretive facilities. Trails and viewpoints provide access to vistas of the crater, blast zone, and Spirit Lake area; some routes require planning and seasonal access checks.
Construction and geological study of the volcano intensified after the 1980 eruption, and monitoring networks now track seismicity, gas emissions, and ground deformation to provide early warnings of renewed activity. Scientific research and education are ongoing features of the site.
Mount St. Helens lies in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southwestern Washington, north of the Columbia River Gorge and within driving distance of regional cities; visitor facilities such as Johnston Ridge Observatory are located on the mountain’s northern approach.
- 1980 eruption: The major 1980 eruption on May 18 removed the volcano's summit and produced a lateral blast; its effects reshaped the mountain and surrounding landscape.
What to See #
- Johnston Ridge Observatory: Johnston Ridge Observatory - a visitor centre and viewpoint on the north side that provides exhibits, trail access, and views into the 1980 crater area.
- Crater rim and Spirit Lake: Spirit Lake area and the crater rim - landscape features dramatically altered by the 1980 eruption and studied for ecological recovery and geology.
How to Get to Mount St. Helens #
Mount St. Helens can be approached from I-5: take the exit for Castle Rock or Spirit Lake toward State Route 504 (the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway). The Johnston Ridge Observatory is about 52 miles (84 km) east of Interstate 5 via SR-504; note that SR-504 often opens seasonally (typically late spring through fall) depending on snow and road work. The Gifford Pinchot National Forest offices in Cougar and the US Forest Service website provide up-to-date closure information.
Tips for Visiting Mount St. Helens #
- Drive early to the Windy Ridge or Johnston Ridge viewpoints to catch the morning light on the crater-these spots fill in summer on clear days.
- Check current road and trail conditions with the Gifford Pinchot National Forest or US Forest Service; seasonal closures are common after heavy snow.
- Bring binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens; the active crater is best observed from the Johnston Ridge Observatory rather than close approach.
Best Time to Visit Mount St. Helens #
Best visited in summer for open roads and clear views; always check ranger reports for conditions.
