Mount Sinabung is an active stratovolcano on the Karo plateau of North Sumatra, Indonesia, with a summit elevation of roughly 2,460 metres. After centuries of dormancy it became active again in the 21st century and has produced repeated explosive eruptions.

Major renewed activity began in 2010 and escalated with violent eruptions from 2013 onward, producing pyroclastic flows, ash plumes and periodic evacuations of local communities. The volcano remains closely monitored by Indonesian volcanological authorities.

Sinabung sits in a largely agricultural landscape on Sumatra’s northern island, and its eruptions have affected nearby villages, air quality and local transport during active phases.

  • Activity and height: The summit elevation is about 2,460 metres, and the volcano has produced frequent eruptions in the 21st century, making nearby areas subject to evacuations and ashfall advisories.

How to Get to Mount Sinabung #

Mount Sinabung (North Sumatra) is usually reached from Medan. Tips for Visiting Mount Sinabung #

  • Check the volcano's current activity and any exclusion zones with official Indonesian authorities or your accommodation before going - Sinabung is active and access rules change frequently.
  • Base yourself in Karo plateau towns such as Berastagi or Kabanjahe for the quickest, most reliable views and for local guides who know safe vantage points when the volcano is calm.
  • Visit at dawn when winds tend to be lighter and ash/steam plumes are less likely to obscure visibility; while here, include short detours to nearby Karo villages and terraces for cultural context many visitors miss.
