Mount Sanqing
Mountain Scenic Taoist mountain with granite pillars and temples
A Taoist mountain range in Jiangxi, Mount Sanqing has granite pillars, twisted rock formations and temples; the national park draws hikers, photographers and pilgrims studying Taoist scenery and geological formations.
Mount Sanqing is a granite mountain massif in Jiangxi province, China, named after the Taoist concept of the Three Pure Ones. It is noted for dramatic granite pillars, steep peaks and dense pine woodland and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008.
The site features towering granite pillars, narrow ridges and panoramic viewpoints reachable by hiking paths and park walkways. Visitors explore viewing platforms, forested trails and the principal summits that form the mountain’s distinctive silhouette. Many routes concentrate on the three main summit peaks that give the mountain its name.
Geologically the area is formed of deeply eroded granite that has produced steep towers and unusual rock shapes over long timescales. Mount Sanqing also has long associations with Taoist belief, which influenced the mountain’s cultural significance and place names.
The massif sits in northeastern Jiangxi province near the prefecture-level city of Shangrao, surrounded by forested hills and scenic countryside.
