Mount Sabyinyo
Volcano Tri-peaked volcanic mountain on Rwanda–DRC border.
Mount Sabyinyo sits on the tri-border of the Virunga volcanic chain between DRC, Rwanda and Uganda; the rugged volcanic cone appeals to experienced hikers and lies close to parks known for mountain gorillas.
Mount Sabyinyo is a volcano in the Virunga volcanic range that lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. The mountain is notable for its three-peaked summit and rugged, heavily forested slopes.
The ridge offers steep day hikes from the Ugandan side and scenic viewpoints that look into adjacent countries; the mountain is surrounded by protected areas that support populations of primates, including mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Trails are demanding and climb quickly from the forested base to rocky saddle sections near the summits.
Sabyinyo formed through volcanic activity that created the Virunga chain and its jagged triple summit. Over time the mountain and its slopes have been protected within national parks on the three countries’ sides, and it remains a focus for cross-border conservation efforts.
Geographically it occupies the central Virunga range in east-central Africa, forming part of the border ridge between the DRC, Rwanda and Uganda and rising above the surrounding highland landscapes and parklands.
- Border access: Sits on the tri-border area between three countries - permits and park arrangements vary by country so check rules in Rwanda, Uganda or the DRC before planning a visit.
