Mount Royal Park
Park Large urban park surrounding Montreal's Mount Royal summit
Montreal’s Mount Royal Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, contains wooded trails, Beaver Lake and the Kondiaronk belvedere; city walkers, runners and view-seekers come for skyline panoramas and year-round recreation.
Mount Royal Park is a major urban park centered on the volcanic cone of Mount Royal in Montreal, Quebec, forming a green massif within the city. It was designed in the 19th century with contributions from landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and remains one of Montreal’s principal public parks.
The park includes formal and informal trails, picnic areas, viewpoints, and wooded slopes covering the mountain, with notable features such as scenic lookouts over downtown Montreal and the St. Lawrence River. Paths range from paved promenades to steeper woodland trails used for walking, running and winter sports such as cross-country skiing.
Mount Royal Park was created to provide public green space for Montreal and has been developed and managed by municipal authorities since its foundation. Over time the park has been refined with constructed lookouts, lakes and maintained trails while retaining large tracts of natural woodland.
The park occupies the central elevated area of the island of Montreal, immediately northwest of the downtown core. It is within the city limits and is accessible from multiple neighborhoods by road, metro and foot.
