Mount Rogers
Mountain Virginia's highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains
At Virginia’s highest point Mount Rogers sits along the Appalachian Trail with grassy balds, backcountry camping and a chance to join guided hikes and nearby wild pony sightings in Grayson Highlands.
Mount Rogers is the highest natural point in the U.S. state of Virginia at 5,729 feet (1,746 meters). It lies within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and is a focal point for hikers and backcountry visitors.
Short trails lead to the summit marker and the area is closely associated with the nearby open balds of Grayson Highlands, where seasonal grazing and free-roaming ponies are a notable feature. The Appalachian Trail runs through the broader highland area, connecting the summit zone to longer-distance routes.
The highland was shaped by ancient geological processes and is dominated by upland meadows and spruce-fir pockets at higher elevations. Over the 20th century land-management for recreation and conservation established the current trail network and protected areas.
Mount Rogers sits in southwestern Virginia near the border with North Carolina and is accessed by forest roads and trailheads within the Jefferson National Forest.
