The mountain is a major objective for mountaineers and a focal point for visitors traveling the Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16).

The peak was first recorded as climbed in the early 20th century, and it has long featured in exploration and mountaineering history in the Canadian Rockies. Over time the area has been managed as part of Mount Robson Provincial Park to protect its alpine environments.

Tips for Visiting Mount Robson #

  • Arrive before 9am at the Mount Robson Visitor Centre to beat day-hiker crowds and get the best, unobstructed views of the north face.
  • If hiking Berg Lake, reserve a backcountry permit months in advance (summer fills early); plan at least 3-4 days round-trip for the trail to the lake.
  • Bring a windproof shell-the valley funnels sudden, cold gusts even on sunny days. Expect mosquitoes in July; permethrin-treated clothing helps.
  • From the Visitor Centre, the best photographic light falls in the late afternoon; for sunrise reflections on Kinney Lake, be on trail before dawn.
