Approaches within the provincial park lead to viewpoints, alpine lakes and glaciers; the Berg Lake area at the base of the north face is a well-known multi-day hiking destination and provides close views of the Robson Glacier. The mountain is a major objective for mountaineers and a focal point for visitors traveling the Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16).
The peak was first recorded as climbed in the early 20th century, and it has long featured in exploration and mountaineering history in the Canadian Rockies. Over time the area has been managed as part of Mount Robson Provincial Park to protect its alpine environments.
Geographically the mountain sits in the eastern slopes of British Columbia near the border with Alberta, towering above the Robson Valley and visible from sections of the Yellowhead Highway; the nearest service towns for park access include Valemount and Jasper to the east.

How to Get to Mount Robson #
Mount Robson is accessed from Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16). The Mount Robson Visitor Centre sits at about kilometre 236 on Highway 16 between Valemount (≈63 km west) and Jasper (≈140 km east). The Berg Lake trailhead is a short drive north from the Visitor Centre; parking is available but early arrival is recommended in summer. The nearest town with full services is Valemount.
Tips for Visiting Mount Robson #
- Arrive before 9am at the Mount Robson Visitor Centre to beat day-hiker crowds and get the best, unobstructed views of the north face.
- If hiking Berg Lake, reserve a backcountry permit months in advance (summer fills early); plan at least 3-4 days round-trip for the trail to the lake.
- Bring a windproof shell-the valley funnels sudden, cold gusts even on sunny days. Expect mosquitoes in July; permethrin-treated clothing helps.
- From the Visitor Centre, the best photographic light falls in the late afternoon; for sunrise reflections on Kinney Lake, be on trail before dawn.
