The peak presents steep granite faces, sharp ridgelines, and glacially carved cirques that appeal to technical climbers and experienced scramblers. Adjacent high country includes lakes and alpine basins that are popular for backpacking, photography, and mountaineering approaches.

The mountain was named in the 19th century for the German geographer Carl Ritter and was surveyed during early Sierra exploration. Glaciation and alpine erosion shaped the current rugged topography used today for climbing and high-country routes.

Mount Ritter sits in the central Sierra Nevada, east of the Yosemite region and within the Ansel Adams Wilderness, with road access and trailheads on the eastern side of the range near the Mammoth Lakes region.
