Mount Redoubt
Mountain Active stratovolcano in Alaska's Aleutian volcanic arc
Active stratovolcano in Alaska’s Cook Inlet, noted for explosive eruptions that produce ash clouds affecting aviation. Scientists, pilots and adventurous visitors watch it from flightseeing tours and coastal viewpoints.
Mount Redoubt is an active stratovolcano in the Chigmit Mountains of the Aleutian Range in Alaska. Its summit reaches 10,197 ft (3,108 m), making it one of the higher peaks in the region.
The mountain is noted for its glaciated summit and explosive eruptions that produce high ash plumes and pyroclastic activity. Scientific monitoring, aerial observations, and occasional flyover viewing are the main ways people observe the volcano; public access near the summit is limited and weather can change rapidly.
Recorded eruptions in the modern era include major events in 1989-1990 and again in 2009, both of which produced significant ash clouds and local volcanic hazards. The Alaska Volcano Observatory maintains ongoing monitoring and issues alerts when activity increases.
Mount Redoubt sits on the northern side of Cook Inlet in south-central Alaska, within the Chigmit subrange of the Aleutian Range. It is located southwest of Anchorage and is visible from parts of the surrounding lowlands when weather permits.
- Volcanic activity: Eruptions are explosive and can send ash plumes high enough to disrupt aviation; the volcano is monitored by the Alaska Volcano Observatory.
- Summit elevation: Glaciated summit reaches 10,197 ft (3,108 m) above sea level, and eruptions have produced lahars and ashfall that affect nearby lowlands.
How to Get to Mount Redoubt #
Mount Redoubt is remote and not served by public roads. Reaching the volcano itself requires air access or lengthy backcountry approaches on foot or by boat; there is no direct road access to the summit.
Tips for Visiting Mount Redoubt #
- Aim for early-morning flightseeing from Anchorage or Homer when winds are usually lighter and visibility is best - most visitors see Mount Redoubt by air rather than overland.
- Book with an experienced bush-plane or glacier-flight operator that runs departures from Lake Hood/Anchorage or Homer; they know the safe viewing corridors and will position you for the best photographic angles.
- Check the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) for current activity alerts and ash advisories before planning a visit or flight; Redoubt is an active volcano and conditions can change rapidly.
