Tips for Visiting Mount Rausu #

  • Climb Mount Rausu during the main summer window (typically mid‑June to early September) when the alpine trails are most accessible; outside that period snow and technical conditions persist and make the ascent far more difficult.
  • Start very early from the Rausu/Onnemoto trailhead and consider hiring a local guide-Shiretoko's weather changes rapidly, the mountain is remote, and guided parties are typical for safety and route‑finding.
  • Be bear‑aware: Shiretoko is prime brown‑bear habitat, so follow local park guidance, group up for hikes, and ask rangers or guides about recent bear activity before setting out.
