In Israel’s Negev, Mount Ramon sits beside the Makhtesh Ramon geological reserve; visitors use it for desert hiking, stargazing, and mountain-biking routes across layered badlands.
Mount Ramon is a ridge and summit in the Negev Highlands of southern Israel, forming part of the rim area above Makhtesh Ramon, the large erosion-created basin known as the Ramon Crater. The peak is one of the higher points in the southern Negev plateau.
The ridge provides viewpoints over the crater and surrounding desert landscapes; local roads and trails provide access for visitors to lookout points and geological features. The area is used for hiking, stargazing and geological study.
Geographically the mountain is located in Israel’s Southern District, near the community of Mitzpe Ramon and within the broader Negev Desert region. It overlooks the elongated Makhtesh Ramon to the east and south.

How to Get to Mount Ramon #
Mount Ramon lies in the Ramon Crater region near the town of Mitzpe Ramon in Israel’s Negev. The standard approach is by car on Route 40 to Mitzpe Ramon, then local gravel roads and marked trails into the crater and up surrounding ridges; the town of Mitzpe Ramon serves as the nearest base with parking and visitor information. Expect to drive from larger cities (Beersheba/Beer Sheva or Jerusalem) to Mitzpe Ramon on paved highways, then continue on local access roads.
Tips for Visiting Mount Ramon #
- Use Mitzpe Ramon as your base-park at the visitor center for maps and current trail information, then follow the marked routes from the town toward Har Ramon; the local visitor center is the best source for up-to-date access and safety notes.
- Plan your visit for sunrise or late afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat typical in the Negev and to catch the crater's best light; many visitors miss quieter panoramic viewpoints just outside the main overlooks if they only visit at peak midday hours.
