Mount Popa
Mountain Extinct volcanic peak topped by a Buddhist monastery
A volcanic plug southeast of Bagan, Mount Popa supports a hilltop monastery and nat shrines. Pilgrims and visitors climb its steep stairway for panoramic views across central Myanmar and encounters with resident macaques.
Mount Popa is an extinct volcano rising in central Myanmar’s Mandalay Region and regarded as the spiritual home of many Burmese nats (spirits). The site is famous for a monastery that sits atop a dramatic volcanic plug above the plain.
The prominent attraction is the monastery and shrine on the volcanic plug, reached by a long stairway of several hundred steps and surrounded by numerous small nat shrines. The lower forested slopes and surrounding area form a popular local pilgrimage zone and viewpoint over the surrounding plains.
The volcanic complex formed through volcanic activity in the region; the monastery on the plug was developed as a religious site over centuries and became associated with nat worship and regional pilgrimage practices. The area has long combined natural prominence with religious significance.
Mount Popa stands as an isolated volcanic massif in the central dry zone, rising above the surrounding lowlands of Mandalay Region and visible from nearby towns and roads that connect to the regional centre of Popa and Kyaukpadaung.
- Stairway: A steep stairway of roughly 777 steps leads up to the main monastery on the volcanic plug, a common pilgrimage route for visitors and worshippers.
