Mount Parnassus
Mountain Greek mountain sacred to Apollo and the Muses
Above Delphi, Mount Parnassus offers ski slopes, hiking trails and views over the Gulf of Corinth; visitors combine archaeology at the Delphi sanctuary with mountain walking and small ski resorts.
Mount Parnassus is a mountain massif in central Greece, rising to roughly 2,457 metres and widely known in antiquity as sacred to Apollo and the Muses. Its slopes form a striking limestone landscape north of the Gulf of Corinth.
The mountain offers hiking routes, mountain refuges and a significant ski area near Arachova that is popular in winter. The southern slopes host the archaeological site of Delphi, with extensive ruins and a museum that illustrate the site’s central role in ancient Greek religion and pan-Hellenic activity.
In classical Greek tradition Parnassus was the mythic home of Apollo and the Muses and a centre of poetic and religious significance; many ancient sources link the mountain directly to Delphi. The massif has been used for pastoralism, quarrying and religious practice over many centuries.
Located in central Greece, Parnassus rises above the valley that contains Delphi and overlooks the Gulf of Corinth to the south, with towns such as Arachova and the Delphi archaeological site on its lower slopes.
- Elevation: Summit elevations reach about 2,457 metres, with high ridges and plateaus popular for hiking and winter sports.
- Delphi site: The southern slopes hold the sanctuary of Delphi, one of the most important religious sites of ancient Greece and a major archaeological attraction today.
What to See #
- Delphi: The archaeological sanctuary of Delphi, located on the mountain's southern slopes, which was the historic site of the Oracle of Apollo and major ancient Greek religious monuments.
- Parnassos Ski Centre: The modern mountain ski area and resort near Arachova, offering alpine skiing and winter tourism on the slopes of Parnassus.
- Corycian Cave: The Corycian Cave, a limestone cave on the mountain associated in antiquity with Pan and nymph cults and reachable by mountain paths.
