Mount Otemanu
Mountain Jagged volcanic peak of Bora Bora island
Jagged remnant of an extinct volcano rising from Bora Bora’s lagoon; reached by boat tours and short ridge walks for dramatic lagoon and reef views.
Mount Otemanu is the jagged remnant of an extinct volcano that dominates the interior of Bora Bora in the Society Islands, French Polynesia, rising to around 727 metres. It is the island’s most recognisable landmark and a common subject of photographs and postcards.
The peak projects sharply from the central island and lagoon, producing dramatic vertical relief and sheltered bays around the fringing reef. Visitors experience the mountain primarily from boat tours, resort viewpoints, beaches, and scenic flights; the spire itself is steep and not typically climbed by casual visitors.
Geologically it is the remains of the volcanic core that formed Bora Bora; the island’s current topography reflects subsequent erosion and reef formation. Modern tourism has shaped visitor access, with most approaches organized through local tour operators.
Mount Otemanu sits in the lagoon of Bora Bora in the Leeward Islands of the Society Islands, French Polynesia, immediately adjacent to the island’s main villages and resort areas.
- Height and appearance: rises to roughly 727 metres and forms the jagged central spire of Bora Bora's lagoon scenery
- Tourist experience: serves as the iconic photographic backdrop of Bora Bora and is most commonly experienced from boat tours, beaches, and aerial flights rather than via a standard summit trail
