Mount Norikura
Mountain Volcanic peak on Japan's Northern Alps, popular hikes
Norikura’s high plateaus in Gifu offer accessible alpine hiking, seasonal wildflowers, ski slopes and nearby onsens; many come for day walks and panoramic views over central Japan’s ranges.
Mount Norikura (Norikura-dake) is a volcanic mountain in central Japan, part of the Hida Mountains (Northern Japanese Alps). It is known for its broad summit area and accessible high-elevation terrain.
The mountain is popular with hikers and nature observers because roads and trails reach high on the flanks, shortening the approach to the summit and alpine zones. Seasonal displays of alpine flora and a number of small crater lakes and ponds attract day visitors as well as multi-day trekkers.
Norikura formed through volcanic activity and its broad, eroded summit contrasts with sharper peaks in the central Alps. Over time recreational facilities, mountain huts and maintained trails have made it one of the more approachable high mountains in the region.
Geographically it lies on Honshu island in Gifu Prefecture near the border with Nagano Prefecture, accessible from regional transport hubs in central Japan.
- Accessibility: A well-developed road and visitor infrastructure allow non-technical access to high elevations, making it popular for day hikes and seasonal alpine flora viewing.
